HostGator alternative

A HostGator alternative with a different owner, not a different logo

Here is the part that catches people out: HostGator and Bluehost are the same company. Both belong to Newfold Digital, along with Network Solutions, Register.com and Web.com. If you are shopping between them, you are shopping within one portfolio.

The case

Switching brands is not switching hosts

The usual route out of HostGator is to compare it against Bluehost, pick whichever has the better offer that week, and move. It feels like taking your business elsewhere. It is not: both are Newfold Digital brands, as are Network Solutions, Register.com, Web.com, Crazy Domains and a good many others.

None of that is a secret, and none of it is improper. It is just not advertised, and the brands are marketed as though they compete. So the frustration that made you look around is quite likely to follow you, because the thing you were frustrated with does not change when the logo does.

We are a genuinely different company: independently owned, run from Milwaukee, same owner since 2000, never sold or merged. Whether that suits you depends on what went wrong at HostGator. If it was the support experience or the renewal pricing, a different owner is exactly what you need. If it was a feature you want, check we have it first — ask us and we will give you a straight answer.

The other thing worth going into with clear eyes is the word “unlimited”.

No shared hosting is unlimited, anywhere, including ours. Every provider that advertises unlimited storage or bandwidth bounds it somewhere else — in the acceptable use policy, in an inode cap, in a CPU or process limit. That is not a scandal; it is the only way shared hosting can work, because a single account cannot be allowed to consume a whole server.

What differs is whether you find out from the marketing or from the terms. We publish a number on every plan instead, which looks worse next to an unlimited badge and is a great deal more useful when you are trying to work out whether your sites will fit. If your account is bumping into limits you were told did not exist, tell us roughly what you are running and we will tell you which plan genuinely covers it — or that none of ours does, if that is the answer.

Being fair

What HostGator does well

If one of these is what you need, stay where you are. We would rather say that than sell you a move you will regret.

Aggressive introductory pricing

Hard to beat on the first-year number, and we will not pretend otherwise. Compare the renewal rates instead — that is where the real difference sits.

Generous shared plans

Plenty of headroom on the mid-tier plans. If you are running many small sites on one account and it is working, there may be no reason to move.

24/7 chat

Always somebody to talk to at any hour. We are Central time, and for some people that alone settles it.

Moving

What leaving HostGator actually involves

Less than people expect, and we do the awkward parts.

  1. Send us the domain

That is usually enough for us to see what you are running and where. We look before quoting, and migration is a flat $299 however many sites are involved. If moving will not fix your problem, we will say so and you can stop there.

  2. We build it alongside your live site

Nothing is switched off. We copy the files, the databases and the email, then test the whole thing on a temporary address while your current site carries on serving visitors.

  3. You look at it, then we cut over

Only once you are happy. DNS changes take a few hours to reach everyone, and your old account stays up throughout, so there is no window where nothing works.

  4. You cancel the old one

On your schedule, not ours, once you are satisfied nothing was missed. We would rather you kept it a fortnight than felt rushed out of it.

Your domain can stay where it is registered. Moving hosting does not require moving the domain, and we will not push you to.

Hosting plans

Our plans, with the renewal price on the card

Three shared plans and no fourth one hiding behind an upsell. First year from $5 a month, and the year-two rate is printed beside it.
